نشأتُه:

وُلِدَ صاحبُ الغبطةِ البطريركُ يوحنّا العاشر عام 1955، في مدينةِ اللاذقيّةِ في سورية. نشأ في بيتٍ عُرِفَ بالعِلْمِ والتّقوى وحُسْنِ العبادة. والدُه، المرحوم مناح يازجي، سُوريٌّ، وقد كان شاعراً وأستاذاً للّغةِ العربيّة. والدتُه، السيّدة روزه موسي، لبنانيّة الأصل. ولغبطته ثلاثةُ إخوة، بينهم مطرانٌ وراهبة.

 

دِراستُه:

دَرَسَ صاحبُ الغبطة في مدارسِ اللاذقيّةِ، ولَمَعَ في الدّراسة فتَخرَّجَ بِتَفَوُّق. إلتحقَ بكلّيّةِ الهندسةِ المدنيّةِ في جامعةِ تشرين في اللاذقيّة. نَبَغَ في مجالِ الموسيقى الكنسيّة، وراحَ يُدَرِّبُ الجوقاتِ على التّرتيلِ وَفْقَ الأُصول، فكان له دورٌ قياديٌّ رائدٌ في صفوفِ الشَّبيبةِ تابَعَه مِن خلالِ إقامةِ برامجَ روحيّةٍ متعدّدة.

 

حَصَلَ على شهادةِ الليسانس في اللاهوت عام 1978 مِن معهدِ القدّيسِ يوحنّا الدّمشقيِّ اللاهُوتيِّ في البلمند، ثُمّ حازَ على شهادة الدّكتوراه في اللاهوت عام 1983 مِن جامعةِ سالونيك في اليونان، بِدَرَجَةِ شَرَف. نُشِرَتْ أُطروحةُ الدّكتوراه المكتوبةُ باللغةِ اليونانيّةِ تحتَ عنوان: "خدمةُ المعموديّةِ المقدَّسةِ (دراسةٌ تاريخيّةٌ ولاهوتيّةٌ وليتورجيّة)". وخلال إقامتِه في اليونان، حَصَلَ أيضاً على شهادةِ الدّبلوم في الموسيقى الكنسيّةِ مِن المعهدِ العالي للموسيقى البيزنطيّةِ في سالونيك.

 

 

مسيرتُه وحضورُه الكنسيّ:

رُسِمَ غبطتُه شمّاساً عام 1979، ثمّ كاهناً عام 1983 في أبرشيّةِ اللاذقيّة، على يَدِ سيادةِ المتروبوليت يوحنّا منصور. منذ العام 1981 قامَ غبطتُه بِتَدريسِ مادّةِ الليتورجيا في معهدِ القدّيسِ يوحنّا الدّمشقيّ اللاهوتيّ، ثمّ تَبَوَّأَ منصبَ عميدِ كلّيّةِ اللاهوت (معهدِ القدّيس يوحنّا الدّمشقيّ) في جامعةِ البلمندِ لفترتَين، الأُولى في السّنوات: 1988-1991 والثّانية في السّنوات: 2001- 2005، كما تَوَلّى رئاسةَ ديرِ سيّدةِ البلمندِ البطريركيِّ في السّنوات: 2001 – 2005.

 

تَسَلَّمَ رئاسةَ ديرِ القدّيسِ جاورجيوس الحُمَيراء البطريركيِّ في وادي النّضارة، في السّنوات: 1993-2005 حيثُ أسَّسَ رهبنةً، وأنشأَ مدرسةَ التّنشئةِ الإكليريكيّةِ على صعيدِ البطريركيّة. وساهم غبطته في تأسيسِ ديرِ السّيّدةِ للرّاهباتِ في بلمّانا – طرطوس.

 

إنتخَبَه المجمعُ الأنطاكيُّ المقدَّس في عام 1995 أُسقفاً على منطقة الحصن في وادي النّضارة، أبرشيّةِ عكّار. وفي العام 2008 عاد المجمعُ الأنطاكيُّ المقدَّسُ وانتخبه ميتروبوليتاً على أبرشيّةِ أوروبا.

 

بالإضافةِ إلى النّشاطِ الكنسيِّ الدّاخليِّ، كان لغبطتِه حضورٌ خارجيٌّ أيضاً على المستوى المسيحيِّ عامّةً، والأرثوذكسيِّ خاصّة. وله مواقفُ إنسانيّةٌ، وطنيّةٌ ومسكونيّةٌ هامّة، عَبَّرَ عنها في المؤتمراتِ والحواراتِ الكنسيّة والوطنيّة. وقد اشتهرَ بوضوحِ الرُّؤيا واعتمادِه كلمةَ الحَقِّ معياراً لكلِّ الحلول. عَرَفَ كيف يَجمَعُ الشَّملَ الدّاخليَّ، ويدعو إلى الحوارِ والمصالحةِ بين جميعِ الأَفْرِقاء.

 

مِنَ المعروف أنّهُ حيثما حَلَّ صاحبُ الغبطةِ ونَشطَ، ظَهَرَتْ للحالِ نهضةٌ كنسيَّةٌ لامعةٌ وقويّة. فقد عُرِفَ بقربِه من الشّبابِ، وبدعوته لهم إلى خدمةِ الكنيسةِ والوطنِ والمجتمع. في مراحلِ خدمتِه الكنسِيّة، عُرِفَ بحكمتِهِ في العملِ الإداريِّ والمُؤَسَّساتِيّ. كما تميّزَ بدماثة الخُلق وسَلاسة الطَبع ولين المَعشر.

 

 

انتخابُه بطريركًا:

عند شُغورِ السُّدَّةِ البطريركيّة بوفاة المُثلَّثِ الرَّحمات البطريرك إغناطيوس الرابع، انتُخِبَ المتروبوليت يوحنّا يازجي في الجلسة الاستثنائية للمَجمع الأَنطاكيِّ المُقدَّسِ في السابع عشر من شهر كانون الأول سنة 2012 في دَيرِ سيّدةِ البلمند، بطريركاً على أنطاكية وسائرِ المشرق للرّومِ الأرثوذكس، باسم البطريرك يوحنّا العاشر.

Personal Data:

 

His Beatitude John X was born in the city of Latakia, Syria, in the year 1955. He was raised in a home known for education, virtue and faith. His father, Manah Yazigi, a Syrian, was a teacher of Arabic and a poet. His mother, Rozah Moussi, is of Lebanese origin. His Beatitude has three siblings, one of whom is a bishop and another a nun.

 

Education:

 

His Beatitude attended the schools of Latakia. He enrolled in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Techrin, in Latakia. He has studied church music and excelled in it, forming choirs and training them in traditional church chants. He is a notable leader of young people and has worked with them in various social and spiritual programs.

 

He received the degree of Bachelor of Theology from the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology at Balamand in 1978. He then studied at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece and received the degree of Doctor of Theology with Distinction in the year 1983. His doctoral thesis, which was written in Greek and carried the title The Service of the Holy Baptism: A Historical, Theological, and Liturgical Study, was published. While in Greece, he also studied church music and received a Diploma from the Higher Institute of Byzantine Music in Thessaloniki.

 

Ecclesiastical Career:

 

His Beatitude was ordained deacon in 1979 and then priest in 1983 in the Archdiocese of Latakia by His Eminence Metropolitan Youhanna Mansour. From 1981, His Beatitude taught courses on liturgy in the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology. He was in due course appointed Dean of the Institute of Theology in the University of Balamand, his first appointment being from 1988 to 1991 and second from 2001 to 2005. In addition, he served as Abbot in the Patriarchal Monastery of Our Lady of Balamand from the year 2001 to 2005. He served as Abbot of the Saint George Al Humayrah Patriarchal Monastery in Wadi Al-Nadarah, Syria, from 1993 to 2005. He founded a monastic community there and established a School of Ecclesiastical Studies that serves the Patriarchate as a whole. In addition, he participated in the founding of the Convent of Our Lady of Blemmena in Tartous, Syria.

 

His Beatitude was elected by the Holy Antiochian Synod Bishop of Al Husun, Wadi Al-Nadarah in the Archdiocese of Akkar in the year 1995. He served in this position until 2008, when the Holy Synod elected him Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Europe. In addition to his work within the Orthodox Church, His Beatitude also played an important role outside the Church, not least through attending religious seminars and international conferences.

 

His Beatitude is famed for the clarity of his views and his strict adherence to all that is true and just in human relations. He has excelled in bringing people together, through dialogue and conciliatory approaches to people of differing views. He is known for his compassion, friendliness, generosity, social concern and, last but not least, readiness both to listen and to offer help.

 

Wherever His Beatitude has served, he has brought revival, awakening the youth and calling them to the service of both Church and society. He is particularly noted for his wisdom in managing institutions and conducting church affairs. He has played a crucial role in encouraging vocations to the ordained ministry, maintaining leadership in this regard.

 

 

Election to the Patriarchate:

 

On the death of His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV, Metropolitan Youhanna Yazigi was elected to the Patriarchate by the Holy Antiochian Synod in an extraordinary session held on December 17, 2012, in Balamand Monastery. The new Patriarch was designated His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East for the Greek Orthodox.

 

 

Publications:

 

His Beatitude John X is the author of books on theology, education, music, and liturgy. On the last topic he has published a series of liturgical studies. He has further edited liturgical manuals of the Orthodox Church in Arabic and, specifically, liturgical works pertinent to archbishops, priests and deacons. In addition, he has translated and written many articles and given many lectures in universities, institutes and parishes.

Sa naissance

Né en 1955 à Lattaquié (Syrie), Sa Béatitude Jean X a grandi dans une famille instruite, pieuse et pratiquante comprenant quatre enfants dont deux évêques (son frère et lui-même) et une religieuse. Son père, feu Manah Yazigi, syrien d’origine, était poète et instituteur de langue arabe. Quant à sa mère, Roza Moussi, elle est d’origine libanaise.

 

Ses études

Après de brillantes études dans les écoles secondaires de Lattaquié, Sa Béatitude s’inscrit à la Faculté de Génie Civile de l’Université Tichrine à Lattaquié. S’étant distingué en musique religieuse, et manifestant de grandes qualités de leader, il entraine des chorales suivant les normes reconnues. Il jouera un rôle dirigeant parmi les jeunes en organisant plusieurs activités spirituelles.

Sa licence en théologie, il l’obtient en 1978 à l’Institut de Théologie Saint Jean Damascène de Balamand, suivie du doctorat en théologie en 1983 de l’Université de Salonique en Grèce avec une mention honorable. Sa thèse, Le Saint Baptême : une étude historique, théologique et liturgique sera publiée grec. Pendant son séjour en Grèce, et parallèlement à ses études théologiques, il obtient un diplôme en musique liturgique de l’Institut Supérieur de Musique Byzantine de Salonique.

 

Son parcours ecclésiastique

Ordonné diacre en 1979, puis prêtre en 1983 à la paroisse de Lattaquié par l’évêque Youhanna Mansour, Sa Béatitude assume, depuis 1981, l’enseignement de la liturgie à l’Institut de Théologie Saint Jean Damascène dont il sera le doyen pour deux mandats : le premier de 1988 à 1991, et le deuxième de 2001 et 2005 pendant lequel il fut le Supérieur du Monastère Patriarcal Notre-Dame de Balamand.

Entre 1993 et 2005, il prend en charge le Monastère Patriarcal St Georges de Humeira à Wadi el-Nadara et y fonde un ordre religieux et une école pour la formation cléricale au niveau patriarcale. Il contribue également à la fondation du Couvent Notre-Dame de Bloummana à Tortossa (Tartous) en Syrie.

En 1995, le Saint Synode de l’Eglise d’Antioche l’a élu évêque du Hosn à Wadi el-Nadara relié à la paroisse de Akkar (Liban). Il y servira jusqu’en 2008, date à laquelle le Saint Synode l’élira Métropolite d’Europe occidentale et centrale.

En plus de son ministère au sein des évêchés, Sa Béatitude s’est illustré par une présence active tant sur le plan chrétien en général qu’orthodoxe en particulier. Ses positions humanitaires, nationales et œcuméniques, il les exprima lors des congrès et débats ecclésiastiques et nationales.

Connu pour sa vision claire des choses, et pour son recours à la justice comme critère pour toute solution adéquate, il sut comment unir toutes les parties en faisant appel au dialogue et à la réconciliation. Sa Béatitude se distingue par la noblesse de son caractère, par sa diplomatie et sa flexibilité, par son respect des autres, sa disponibilité et sa volonté d’écouter et d’aider.

Là où se trouve Sa Béatitude, l’Eglise connaît un rapide et brillant renouveau. Proche des jeunes, il les incite à servir l’Eglise, la Nation et la Société. Tout au long de son parcours ecclésiastique, il fit montre d’une sagesse incomparable dans les domaines administratif et institutionnel.

 

Son élection au rang de Patriarche

A la mort de Sa Béatitude le Patriarche Ignace IV, le Métropolite Jean (Yazigi) fut élu par le Saint Synode d’Antioche réuni le 17 décembre 2012 au Monastère de Notre Dame de Balamand, Patriarche grec orthodoxe d’Antioche et de tout l’Orient. Sa Béatitude prendra le nom de Jean X.
